I haven’t eaten since yesterday morning, I’m so hungry but I don’t have money. I could go beg, maybe steal but that’s my last resort. I don’t really like doing that kind of thing, sometimes I have to. Sometimes I go days without eating. I will mostly rummage garbage can after garbage can. Until I find something somewhat edible. That’s what I was doing today, just like I do every day. But today, today was different. Today I was rummaging through a garbage can when I found a slightly eaten doughnut. It looked great, since I haven’t eaten for almost a day. But I was afraid that was the only thing I would get for a while now. Lucky for me, today turned out differently. I was sitting there eating the doughnut when I turned around and saw someone staring at me. It was Petey. My old pal Petey. He looked confused, lost, maybe even worried. He didn’t recognize me though, I mean who would. Look at my clothes, and I haven’t cleaned up for days. It took a lot of explaining for him to finally understand. He was, it looked like, feeling sorry or sympathetic. That’s when he handed me money. It was unbelievable. I was so grateful. With that little amount of money, I could buy more food than I have eaten this past week, possibly month. Petey will never understand how much this little gesture meant to me. “Thanks, Petey. Thanks a lot. For a quarter I can get a fried-egg sandwich, custard pie, and coffee.”
