I'm guessing that Charlie had wanted to see Petey so he could apologize. Charlie didn’t want to feel 'un even' or lower then Petey, by wearing his old clothes that have rips in them. That’s why Charlie went and took the shirt. At first he had told Petey that he was burrowing it, but I'm thinking that after Petey had told him that they are having a rough time too. I think that Charlie didn’t want or need to hide how hard it was for him also. (if that makes sense). When Petey took in Charlie and there was food on the counter, he was very excited. Charlie hasn’t eaten like that or even eaten in such a long time. So I'm thinking that when Peteys mother told him to help himself to anything, he took it and 'helped himself' to the whole loaf of bread. Petey didn’t care, he wasn’t mad at all. If anything Petey expected it probably.
